Question about a sourdough disaster that happened at my cousin's wedding in Boise

I brought what I thought was a perfect loaf, but the humidity in the church hall turned my crust into a sad, chewy mess, so has anyone else baked for a big event and had the location totally wreck it?

Oh man, the humidity turning a crust into a chewy mess is the worst. I mean, I once brought rolls to a family thing and left them in the car for like twenty minutes while we unloaded. They went from perfect to having the texture of a gym towel. It's so defeating after all that work. Maybe it's just me but I'm paranoid about where I put my bread now, like I'll check the weather report for the inside of a building.

Ever try a cooler with a dry towel in the bottom?

Can anyone else just sit here and appreciate how @moore.beth described the table “sweatiness”? That's tragically accurate. I once left a loaf on a plastic folding table for ten minutes and it came out tasting like it had been marinating in despair. Boxes, towels, maybe next time I'll just hold the bread in my lap the whole time like a nervous parent.

That gym towel texture finleyl39 mentioned is the perfect way to describe it. It's like the bread just gives up and gets soggy. I started bringing a big, clean cardboard box to set stuff in for events, just to get it up off damp tables. It doesn't fix the air, but it helps fight the sweatiness a countertop can add. You put in all that time for it to be ruined by the vibe of a room.
