Rant: My neighbor's 'simple' cookie swap tip almost wrecked my whole batch

I was at the PTA bake sale setup last month and my neighbor Linda said, 'Just add an extra half cup of flour to any cookie recipe, it makes them chewier every time.' I mean, I tried it with my go-to chocolate chip recipe and they came out like dry little hockey pucks. It completely threw off the butter to flour ratio. Has anyone else gotten a baking tip that sounded good but totally backfired?

Davidkim nailed it with the climate thing, my kitchen gets super dry in winter so extra flour is a disaster. Reminds me of when my aunt swore by adding an egg white for fluffiness and my pancakes came out like rubber frisbees.

That tip works like a charm for me.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to fix a squeaky floor with a similar hack. Used a bar of soap in the cracks between the boards. It worked for a week, then the whole thing turned into a sticky, dusty mess. Had to pull up the boards anyway. Sometimes the quick fix just makes the real job harder later.

Honestly, that kind of advice drives me nuts because it ignores how recipes are built. Baking is like chemistry, and flour amounts depend on your specific climate and how you measure. My guess is Linda scoops her flour right from the bag, which packs it down, while you might spoon and level it. That half cup could be way more than she thinks. So her fix works for her method but wrecks yours. It's not a universal tip at all.
