That week in July when every batch of bread I baked collapsed in the oven

Turned out my kitchen thermometer was off by 25 degrees, so my dough was proofing way too hot and the yeast burned out before even hitting the oven, has anyone else dealt with a thermometer failing mid-project without noticing?

Man that is SO frustrating when you think you're doing everything right and your gear betrays you like that. Had a similar thing happen with my oven thermometer a while back and it took me way too long to figure out what was going wrong. Made me feel crazy.

Used to think thermometers were rock solid but that experience changed my mind.

My meat thermometer was reading 40 degrees off by the time I figured out what was happening, ruined a whole brisket I'd been smoking for 12 hours. The crazy part was that it seemed fine for smaller stuff like chicken breasts, but the big cuts of meat really exposed how bad the calibration was. I tested it in boiling water finally (you know, the way you're supposed to) and felt like such a fool. Now I check all my thermometers against an ice bath or boiling water every few months, just to be safe.
