Thought my oven was broken but it was just the baking soda I forgot to replace

Burned two batches of cookies last Sunday before realizing the expired baking soda was too old to do anything, now I'm wondering if anyone else has chased a phantom fix only to find out it was something stupid simple.

Chlorine in the tap water killing the yeast? That's wild, @foster.jordan I never would've thought of that.

My aunt had a similar thing with her sourdough starter last fall. She was ready to toss it after three flat loaves in a row, buying new flour and even checking the water temp. Turned out the tap water she'd been using had a slight change from the city's winter treatment schedule. The chlorine levels were just high enough to kill the wild yeast without her noticing. Sometimes the simplest fix isn't even in the pantry, it's coming out of your faucet.
