TIL my oven runs 25 degrees hot and that explains a lot

I finally bought a cheap oven thermometer after my cookies kept burning on the bottom. My oven's been running hot this whole time... I just set it to 350 and trusted the dial. Anyone else have to adjust their recipes for a weird oven?

Honestly this feels like a life lesson in disguise. We trust the numbers on things way too much. The thermostat, the gas gauge, even the clock. Half the stuff we rely on is just a little bit wrong. Makes you wonder what else we take at face value that's actually broken. That oven thermometer is a good reminder to check the basics first.

Read an article last year about how most car speedometers are off by a few miles per hour. They're designed to overestimate on purpose. Makes you question every number you see.

Been there, done that, got the burnt cookies to prove it. My last apartment's oven was a full 30 degrees off. I ruined two batches of brownies before I figured it out. The bottoms were charcoal but the centers were still raw. A cheap oven thermometer saved my baking life. Now I check the temp every time I move.
