My wife made me eat Indian food with a fork instead of my hand
She said it was more civilized. I tried it at this spot called Curry Pot in downtown Austin. Lost all the flavor connection. The basmati rice just slides off silverware. Has anyone else had a cultural food rule trash their whole meal experience?

Read an article about how eating with your hands actually changes digestion, something about your gut reacting to touch and temperature through your fingertips. My cousin visited from Hyderabad and said the same thing, he refused to touch a fork with biryani because the flavors blend differently. You lose that sensory connection when you use utensils, the rice and curry just sit separate. Though I get why some folks find it messy, for me it ruins the whole experience. Curry Pot is great though, their lamb rogan josh is killer.

@karencampbell nailed it with that sensory connection thing. Eating with your hands is almost like the food talks to your fingertips before it hits your tongue, and silverware just kills that whole conversation. Curry Pot's rogan josh is legit though, shame you had to fight the fork the whole time.

Is it really that different though? I've eaten biryani both ways and honestly can't tell the difference once it's in my mouth. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people overthink this stuff. Your taste buds do all the work anyway, not your fingers. And let's be real, washing your hands every five minutes at a restaurant is a hassle, especially when the sinks are gross. I'd rather just use a fork and focus on the actual flavor of the food instead of worrying about getting grease under my nails. Plus, if you're eating something saucy like rogan josh, it's way easier to keep it neat with silverware.
