The gas station clerk who refused to sell me a lighter changed my whole view on fire safety
Last Tuesday at 11 p.m. I stopped at a Shell off I-35 in Denton to grab a lighter for my camping stove. The clerk, this older dude named Ray, saw my propane canister and just goes, 'You know those explode near flames, right?' I laughed it off, but he pulled up a video on his phone of a tent fire from a faulty stove connection, 3 families displaced last year in Texas. He wouldn't ring me up until I bought a $4 heat shield and showed him the safety latch on my tank. It felt ridiculous in the moment, but that one stranger's stubbornness has made me triple-check every fuel hookup since. Has anyone else had a retail worker actually talk them out of a risky purchase, or was this just some weirdo with a mission?
