This guy at a Denver bike co-op said my 1970s Schwinn was worth more as scrap, and I still think he was wrong
Back in 2019 I hauled a rusty Schwinn Varsity into a co-op on Santa Fe Drive, and this older volunteer looked it over for maybe 10 seconds and said it was "a $40 parts bike, tops." I argued that old steel frames like that still ride great and people restore them all the time, but he just shrugged and moved on to the next repair. Fast forward to now, I see the same frame going for $150 to $300 on local swap pages, and his whole "scrap it" take feels way off. Sure, mine needed $60 in cables and a new chain, but that bike still rolls smoother than stuff I bought new. Maybe he meant the labor would eat the value, but he never said that, just wrote the whole bike off. Somebody talk me out of this: was he being honest about the work, or just too quick to judge an old ride?
