TIL that cleaning my gutters in the fall actually saved me $1,200 on a roof repair this spring

I always figured skipping that chore was no big deal until water backed up under the shingles and rotted out a whole section of plywood, now I'm wondering if anyone else has found a cheap tool or trick that makes gutter cleaning less of a pain?

Actually, water backing up under shingles usually means the problem started with a clogged downspout, not the gutters themselves.

Man, that hits close to home. I once spent a whole afternoon cleaning gutters I swore were clogged, only to find out my downspout had a leaf the size of my forearm stuck in it. Guess I should stick to checking the easy stuff first before I climb a ladder and embarrass myself.
