A librarian in Austin told me to read the most challenged book in my state, and I owe her lunch now
Six months ago a librarian in Austin handed me a list and said the book at the top gets challenged here more than any other, so I checked it out just to see what the fuss was about. It turned out to be a plain story about a kid in middle school, nothing shocking at all, which made me more confused about why people want it gone. What is the most challenged book in your area, and did reading it change how you see the complaints?
Think the issue is that you read it as an adult who already knows what middle school is like, so of course it seems plain to you. Kids that age don't have that same buffer, and some books hit them in ways we can't predict from our own reading. That doesn't mean every challenge is right, but writing off all complaints because one book seemed boring to you skips over the real question, which is what age the book is being handed to. A story can be totally fine for a 14 year old and still not be right for a 10 year old, and libraries serve both. So no, reading one book probably shouldn't flip your whole view of the complaints, it just shows you one example that didn't bother you. Your mileage may vary, but one person's shrug isn't proof that nobody has a real reason.
