Caught myself defending a book I hadn't actually finished reading
Last month at the library board meeting in Portland, I argued hard for keeping 'The Bluest Eye' on the shelves, then realized during my speech that I'd only skimmed the first 50 pages back in college. A woman in the audience asked about the 'blonde, blue-eyed' imagery chapter and I froze completely, so now I'm re-reading it cover to cover before the next vote. Has anyone else been called out for talking about a challenged book they only partially read?

Honestly, half-reading a book and still having strong opinions about it is basically the American way. The whole point of defending a challenged title is about protecting the idea of the thing, not necessarily knowing every page of it. You showed up to fight for the principle, which matters more than some quiz on chapter details, and re-reading it now just proves you're more dedicated than most people on any side of this issue.
