I voted against banning a book after hearing students talk about it

Our school board had a hearing last month about removing The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I went in thinking it should go because of the language. Then three kids from the rez stood up and said it was the first book that felt like their life, and I changed my vote on the spot. Has anyone else flipped sides after hearing from the actual readers?
