Just realized why some parents freak out over 'And Tango Makes Three'
I used to roll my eyes at the fuss over that penguin book. Then I saw a dad at my local library in Austin get legitimately upset because his 5-year-old kept asking why two daddies couldn't have a baby. The book itself is fine, but it opened a conversation he wasn't ready for yet. Anyone else ever see a banning challenge come from real confusion, not just hate?

My neighbor in Austin had the exact same thing happen with his kindergartner after a school librarian read that book out loud. @nelson.vera nailed it - kids really do just want a quick, simple answer and then they're off to play Legos or whatever. I've seen it a dozen times now where the adults make it way more complicated than it needs to be.

Have you tried just letting the conversation happen naturally without pushing it too hard? I had a similar thing with my nephew where I kept it simple like "some families are different" and he moved on pretty quick. Kids usually just want a quick answer and then go back to playing.

My cousin in San Antonio had this exact thing pop up with his 6 year old after a friend's kid mentioned it. He kept it real simple like "some families just look different, that's all" and the kid said "oh okay can we get pizza" and that was it. The whole freak out came from the dad not having a quick answer ready and getting flustered. I told him just be honest but brief, you dont gotta write a whole speech about it. Kids process stuff way faster than we give them credit for if we just answer the question they actually asked.
