TIL picking between a whole banned book and a short excerpt got my club started again
Our little library group in Dayton stalled for three meetings because half of us wanted to read a full challenged novel and half wanted just a chapter to keep it quick. We picked three short excerpts instead, and nine people showed up to the first session, which is double what we usually get. Has anyone else had luck with excerpts to get a group over the hump?
Nine people is great, but I'm not sold on excerpts being the fix. "A chapter to keep it quick" sounds like the real problem is people not wanting to commit, and a chapter still asks them to commit to something. We tried excerpts once and it felt like a sample platter, nobody got hooked on anything. The full book gives people a reason to come back for the next meeting. Maybe your group just needed a win and the excerpts gave it to you, but next time try the whole novel and see if the numbers hold.
