Why does nobody talk about that librarian who laughed at my kid's request?
Last month at the county branch, I asked for 'And Tango Makes Three' for my 7 year old and the librarian snorted, said 'you know that's about penguins in a zoo, right?' like it was a joke, then pointed me to the parenting section instead. Has anyone else gotten that weird gatekeeping vibe from staff when you check out a challenged book for a younger reader?

That librarian laughing at the request, did she actually check the book out to you eventually, or did she spend the whole visit steering you toward her own picks? Because there's a big difference between a staff member who's genuinely confused and one who's decided she knows what's appropriate for your kid better than you do. I've seen library workers do the quiet judgment thing before, but snorting out loud feels like she wanted you to hear it, which makes me wonder if she does that to every parent who asks for a challenged title.
