Got banned from a genealogy forum for pointing out a family myth
I found a family tree online that claimed my great uncle was a war hero. Problem is, I had his draft card and enlistment records. He actually got discharged for a medical issue before shipping out. I posted his name and the document numbers to correct the record. The mods said I was harassing a deceased person and banned me permanently. Has anyone else had a relative's story turn out to be total fiction?

Guess family secrets come with a lifetime ban and no refund.

Family secrets are one thing, airing them online is another. But banning someone permanently and keeping their money? That's harsh. People make mistakes, especially when it's about their own blood. A warning or a temporary suspension would make more sense. Just seems like a convenient excuse to keep both the secret and the cash.

Has nobody thought about what happens when the "secret" turns out to be something illegal or really dangerous? Like a family hiding a history of abuse or a relative who hurt people and got away with it. If that gets posted online, a temp ban isn't gonna undo the damage. A lifetime ban might be their way of saying "we don't want to risk this again" even if it sucks about the money.
