Got muted in a Facebook gardening group for saying compost piles don't need fancy bins
Last Tuesday I posted in a local gardening group about how I just pile my kitchen scraps and leaves in a corner of my yard and it breaks down fine without turning. The admin messaged me saying I was spreading misinformation and muted me for 30 days. I've been composting this way for 7 years in Tulsa and my tomatoes come out huge every summer. Has anyone else been shut down for keeping things simple instead of buying expensive gear?

Honestly that's just ridiculous, muting you for something so basic. I mean, people have been piling stuff in corners for centuries before fancy tumblers even existed. My neighbor in Arkansas does the same thing with his chicken manure and straw, just a big open heap behind his shed, and his okra is the envy of the whole street. It's totally fine as long as you're not composting meat or something that'll attract rats. Sounds like the admin might be one of those people who think you need a PhD to grow a tomato or something. I'd be pretty ticked off too if I got muted for saying something that works just fine for most of us.

@jamieb80 totally feel you on this. It's frustrating when people get all technical about something that's been working fine for generations. Your neighbor's okra sounds legit, kinda makes me want to try that setup.

jamieb80 said it exactly right about people piling stuff in corners for centuries. I read an article from an ag school that said open piles actually break down faster than bins sometimes, more airflow.
