I finally took that harsh critique about my soap labels to heart
I sell handmade soap at a local market here in Portland, and I posted a picture of my new label design on a soapmaking forum last month. One person basically said my font choice looked like a funeral home flyer and the colors were muddy. I was super defensive at first (seriously, I spent 3 hours on that design). But then I looked at other sellers' labels and realized mine did look kinda sad and hard to read from a distance. So I switched to a bold sans-serif font and bright orange accents, and sales actually went up about 40% at the last Saturday market. Has anyone else gotten feedback that stung at first but ended up being the best thing for your work?

The free market research bit is good but its not always that simple. Sometimes feedback is just someone being a jerk or telling you to copy their style instead of finding your own. Your case is different though because you actually looked at what other successful sellers were doing and made a real comparison. That is the key part. Without that step it would have just been one person's opinion that might not even matter to your actual customers at the market. The 40% sales jump is the real proof not just that the critique stung.
