Overheard my sister's friend say 'you're just a numbers person' and it stung more than it should
We were at a BBQ in Phoenix last Saturday and this girl was going on about how her art degree means she thinks deeper than people in "boring jobs." She looked right at me and said accountants just crunch numbers, no real insight needed. I got banned from a finance sub last month for pointing out that most budget advice online is trash because it ignores actual human behavior. I've seen three small businesses in my neighborhood fold because they followed internet gurus instead of their own cash flow patterns. Numbers are just shorthand for stories about what people actually value. That comment made me realize I'd rather be called boring than be wrong about what drives a family's savings. Has anyone else had their profession used to dismiss them in a conversation that had nothing to do with work?
