Rant: caught a coworker lying about a deleted email thread, nobody cared
Last Tuesday I walked past my manager's office and heard him on the phone with our client saying 'the invoice was sent on the 3rd, you must have missed it.' I knew that was a lie because I watched him delete that draft on the 5th after he forgot to hit send. The client paid anyway, so nobody gave two cents about the truth. But I kept thinking, if I called it out, I'd be the one labeled difficult. Has anyone else been in a spot where being honest about a small workplace lie got you treated like the problem?
That bit about the client paying anyway really stands out to me. It's like the outcome being fine is supposed to erase the lie, and that's the part that bugs me. Did you ever get a sense that your manager knew you heard him, or was he totally unaware you were even standing there? I mean, I've been in similar spots where the lie was so small nobody bothered to untangle it, but the weird part is how the truth becomes this optional thing. Maybe it's just me, but I'd want to know if the lie was a one-off mistake or if he does that regularly with other stuff too. Did you try asking him about it later, just casual, or did you figure it wasn't worth the awkwardness?
