That $60 air filter I bought for my basement workshop finally made me stop coughing after 4 months
I kept blaming the dust from sanding but turns out my old furnace filter was letting mold spores through, and after swapping to a proper HEPA unit the smell cleared up in 2 days - has anyone else had a similar fix from a cheap upgrade?

Have you ever had a weird smell coming out of an old dehumidifier that just wouldn't quit? I had this portable one in my basement that started smelling like a wet dog no matter how much I cleaned the tank. I finally pulled the front grill off and there was this thick layer of black gunk caked on the coils and fan blades. Sprayed it down with some bleach water and the whole basement smelled fresh again in like a day. It's funny how a little hidden crud can mess with your lungs for months without you even knowing.
