The 17 cent surge protector that got recalled in 2011 is still the best one I own
Found out last month that the cheap six outlet strip I bought at a hardware store in Toledo back in 2009 was part of a recall in 2011 for overheating. I checked the serial number online and sure enough, mine matched. The CPSC said to cut the cord and send in a form for a refund. I didn't do it. Here's why. That strip has run my dad's old table saw, a space heater every winter since 2012, and about 40 hours of charging drills in my garage. It has never once felt warm to the touch. The recall notice said 17 cents per unit was the manufacturing cost, which is wild because I paid $6 for it. So the recall was really about a $2.50 refund and a lot of paperwork, not about me being in danger. I keep seeing people online say you should always trash recalled items no questions asked, and I get the logic. But 14 years of hard use with zero issues makes me wonder if the recall was more about lawyers than fires. Anyone else still using a recalled product that has been fine for a decade or longer?
