A client told me my fades looked like stairs and I changed my whole guard setup

I used to swear by going up one guard at a time on fades, thought it was the only way to get a smooth blend. Then a guy in my chair last week, who cuts hair himself down in Austin, said "your transition is too sharp, I can see the steps from here" and it hit hard. I started using half guards between my main ones on the sides and the blend looks way cleaner now. Part of me still thinks it slows me down too much on a busy Saturday. Anyone else here use half guards or do you stick to the full numbers?
