I used to finish every fade with a straight razor, now I'm using a foil shaver and I feel like I'm cheating
For years I would not let a client leave my chair until I had gone over the neck and around the ears with a straight razor and shave cream. I liked the ritual of it and honestly the sound of the razor cutting through the stubble felt like the right way to close out a cut. Then about 14 months ago I got a bad batch of blades from a supplier and nicked a regular under the jaw, and he was cool about it but I felt terrible. I switched to a foil shaver just to get through the rest of that week and I never went back. It is faster, my skin irritation complaints dropped to basically zero, and I can get the same closeness in about 90 seconds instead of five minutes. The thing is, some of my older clients still ask for the hot towel and razor finish because that is what they grew up with. So I keep both on the station but I reach for the foil most days and I still feel a little weird about it. Any of you dropped the straight razor for the same reason, or am I just getting soft?
Man, I used to be the same way and would have told you the razor was the only real finish. Then I watched a guy down the street lose a client over a nick that got infected, and it made me rethink the whole thing. The foil gets you just as close without the risk, and the drop in irritation complaints says it all. The old timers want the hot towel and blade because it's a memory for them, not because the shave is better. Keep both on the station and don't feel bad about grabbing the foil on a normal day. You're not getting soft, you're just working smarter.
