My client who's a therapist said my shop feels like a 'safe space' for men to talk, which made me wonder if we're doing more than just haircuts.

He mentioned that for some of his patients, our 30-minute appointment is their only real conversation all week, and now I'm thinking about how to better handle those quiet moments without forcing chatter.

That's a really nice thing for a therapist to notice. Makes me think about how bad I am at just sitting with quiet sometimes, always wanting to fill it. @mianelson is right, it's about listening, not just waiting for your turn. I guess the trick is being okay with not having the perfect thing to say.

Isn't that more about listening than talking?

Listening is the real work of any good conversation.

Yeah exactly, that's what she's saying. The listening part is the actual work, not just waiting for your turn to talk.
