Rant: Everyone says to never use thinning shears on curly hair, but it saved a client's cut last week.
His curls were just too dense and heavy, making the shape look boxy. I used my 40-tooth shears lightly on the interior and it gave the perfect amount of movement without losing texture. Anyone have a different method for dense curls?

Wait, isn't that still thinning them, just carefully?

I used to do that too, @marydavis. My stylist switched me to a texturizing shear instead of thinning shears, and it made a huge difference for my thick hair. It removes weight without making it look wispy.

Yeah, thinning shears can wreck thick hair so fast. My old stylist overdid it once and left me with these weird, see-through ends. A good texturizing shear just takes out bulk in the right spots, so it actually lays better.
