Read an old barber manual from 1958 that said a straight razor should last 50 years

I found this manual at a used book store in Cleveland. It was talking about proper stropping and said a good razor, with care, could serve a barber for half a century. That's a wild lifespan for a tool we use every day. Has anyone actually had a razor last that long?

Half a century? My dad's electric razor from 1999 barely made it to 2010. That manual was clearly written by an optimist.

A straight razor is a totally different beast than an electric one, @umar49. Those old manuals were talking about a solid piece of steel, not a motor and plastic parts. My grandpa had his from the 40s, and it still shaves fine with a good hone. The key is the stropping and occasional sharpening, which keeps the same edge going forever. It's less about optimism and more about a simple, repairable tool.

Sure, a solid steel razor can last, but who has time for stropping every morning? Most people just want a quick shave without the whole ritual. Umar49 has a point about modern stuff breaking fast, but maybe the old way is just overkill for a daily chore. It's a cool skill, but treating it like some lost art feels a bit much.
