Saw a barber in Austin using a straight razor on a beard for the first pass

I was visiting a shop on South Congress last week and watched a guy do the whole beard outline with a shavette before any clippers came out. It looked super clean but made me nervous about skin irritation. Do you think that's a good move for most clients or just for certain beard types?

Man, that sounds like a barber with way too much confidence! @jamie_webb67 is right, going in dry is just begging for trouble. I'd need a lot more trust in the person holding that blade.

Wait, he used a shavette on dry hair for the outline? That's just asking for razor burn on most guys. You need some kind of lube or at least damp skin to reduce the pull. I'd never let someone do that to my face.

Yeah that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Used to think the same until a barber showed me it can work with a super light touch. Changed my mind after seeing how clean the lines come out.
