That guy who asked for a skin fade then said 'not too short' drove me up the wall yesterday
Had a walk-in around 3pm yesterday, guy in his 40s, sits down and says he wants a skin fade with a comb over. I start the first pass with my clippers and he goes 'whoa whoa that's too short.' I stopped and asked what guard he wanted and he said 'just take a little off the top and blend the sides.' After 15 minutes of back and forth I ended up giving him a basic 2 guard trim. Dude watched me the whole time like I was gonna mess up his hair. Anyone else get customers who act like you're guessing when you've been doing this 10 years?

Ugh, I had the exact same thing happen a few months ago! Just gotta smile and nod, then do the most basic cut that still looks good, even if it's not what they originally asked for.

Heard this exact story from a buddy of mine who cuts hair across town, @emmam89. He had a client swear she wanted a pixie cut but then panicked halfway through, so he just gave her the safest bob possible and she loved it. Sometimes you gotta be a therapist and a stylist at the same time.

People act like haircuts are life or death decisions, it's just hair. It grows back in a few weeks, even a bad pixie cut isn't the end of the world. I get that stylists have to deal with nervous clients but all this "therapist and stylist" talk seems dramatic. Maybe tell them straight up that if they're that scared of a pixie they probably shouldn't ask for one. There's way bigger things to stress about than a trim.
