Watched my own haircut on video from 3 years ago and nearly cried
I was scrolling through my phone last night and found a clip from 2020 where I gave myself a fade. Man, the blend was TERRIBLE, huge dark spots right above the ears. Now I spend about 45 minutes just on the transition zone with a 0.5 guard and a mirror check from every angle. What made you guys finally get serious about your fading game?

What finally pushed you to nail down that perfect transition zone?

Honestly, @lily57, the thing that clicked for me was paying attention to the light in the room during the afternoon. I kept trying to match colors during the day and it always looked weird at night. Once I started testing my paint samples at different times of day, the transition zone kind of revealed itself naturally.

the transition zone kind of revealed itself naturally" - see that's the thing, it never reveals itself to me. I had to stop relying on what I saw and start relying on what I felt. Ran my fingers over the fade a hundred times. When you can feel the texture change from scalp to hair, that's the real transition zone. Mirrors lie to you in certain light but your fingertips don't. Got a cheap hand mirror from the drugstore and started checking the back of my head with touch first, then a quick glance for confirmation. Cut my blending mistakes by like 80 percent.
