Stopped at an old farm auction outside Kearney, Nebraska last month and saw a '49 Chevy pickup that had been sitting in a lean-to since 1978
I was driving back from my sister's place and saw signs for a farm auction about 15 miles off the highway, so I figured why not. What got me was this rusty '49 Chevy half ton, still had the original dealer tag from a shop in Grand Island on the tailgate, and the auctioneer said the family parked it when the brakes went out and just never got around to fixing it. 45 years under a lean-to with a dirt floor, and the cab corners were still solid, which honestly surprised me more than anything. My grandpa had a '52 with the same stovebolt six, and seeing that engine sitting there with a mouse nest on the valve cover kind of got me. I didn't bid, it went for $3,100 and I'm still kicking myself a little. Back when I was a kid, people just drove these things into the ground and parked them behind the barn, now every one of them is either a $40k restomod or a pile of rust. Anybody here ever bought one at auction sight unseen and regretted it, or did you get lucky?
