Update: I thought a 1965 Ford F-100 with 112,000 miles on the clock in Yakima was too far gone, but the odometer is what changed my mind
I dragged home a 1965 F-100 from a field outside Yakima last month and the odometer read 112,000, which I figured meant the motor was done for. But when I pulled the valve cover, the rockers looked almost new, and a guy at the parts counter pulled the build sheet and said these trucks rolled off the line with 6-digit odometers that just roll back over at 100k. So now I'm second-guessing every truck I passed on because of a high number, and I'm wondering if anyone else here has been fooled by an odometer that wasn't as bad as it looked?
Man those old Ford odometers are famous for rolling over, so you did good checking the rockers instead of trusting the number. Compression test and a peek at the timing chain will tell you way more than the dash ever will lol. Bet you find a few more cream puffs now that you know what to look for.
Ha, hold up @kim_ramirez3, checking the rockers is great but it ain't the whole story. A motor can look clean as a whistle up top and still have a rod knock waiting to happen, I've seen it twice now. Honestly the test drive tells you more than the compression numbers do, does it pull hard, does it shift smooth, does it smoke when you get on it. Compression is just one piece and people treat it like the final word. You still gotta drive it and listen to it, that's where the real truth lives.
