Vent: tried a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone on the rusted bolts of a 1952 Ford 8N and they broke loose in under 10 minutes
I soaked them for two days with penetrating oil first with zero luck, then a guy at the feed store in Abilene told me to mix up the ATF and acetone and dab it on with a brush. Anyone else got a soak recipe that beats that, or did I just get lucky on old bolts?
How rusty were those bolts really? Because ATF and acetone is a known trick, sure, but 10 minutes on a 1952 tractor that sat outside for decades sounds too good. Those old Fords are tough but rust welds itself into the threads, and a brush dab does not wick down in there that fast no matter what you mix. Maybe the penetrating oil you put on for two days did the real work and the ATF just finished it off. Not saying the mix is junk, but one set of bolts is not proof of much.
