A stranger's comment about my feed made me finally understand the algorithm
Last Tuesday I was waiting for coffee at a shop in Portland and this older guy next to me glanced at my phone. I was scrolling through my photography account and he said, 'you post a lot of pretty stuff, but I can't tell what you're about.' At first I was annoyed, but then I sat with it. I realized every single post I made was just chasing whatever trend was hot that week, no real theme or story tying it together. The algorithm doesn't know who to show my stuff to because I never told it. So I spent the last 5 days going back through my 300 posts and found the only ones that ever got traction were the ones about old abandoned buildings. I've since deleted half my catalog and only post decay and rust now, engagement is up 40% in 3 days. Has anyone else found that narrowing your niche felt like starting over but actually fixed everything?
