This was at a insurance call center in Omaha back around 2019. Big company, maybe 800 people on our floor. The snack fund was one of those things where everyone pitches in $8 a month and you're supposed to rotate who goes to Costco on their lunch break.
So my manager catches me at my desk on a Tuesday morning and goes, hey, you're good with people, you should take over the snack committee. I said sure before I knew any better. First week I buy the obvious stuff, chips, granola bars, those little pretzel packs. Gone by Thursday. Second week I get a little fancy, add string cheese and some apples. Apples all still there Friday, cheese gone Monday.
Third week this woman from billing corners me by the break room and tells me her team never gets any of the good stuff because they work a later shift. Fair point. So I start splitting the order, half for morning, half for afternoon. Now the morning people are mad because the good chips get put out at noon.
Week 6 I'm in a 30 minute meeting with two team leads arguing about whether Cheez-Its count as a chip or a cracker for the budget line. I genuinely had to sit there and listen to this. I quit the committee the next day and told my manager I'd rather take the pay cut that came with it, which was $0 by the way, the job paid literally nothing extra.
Here's my question for anyone who's been through this. Did your big office ever figure out a snack system that didn't turn into a small war, or is it just doomed everywhere? I keep hearing about offices that just do free snacks now and I want to know if that actually fixes it or just moves the fighting somewhere else.
