I hid my Slack status from my old boss for 2 years straight, now I just set it and forget it, which one is actually right?
Back when I worked at a big insurance company in Hartford, I kept my Slack status on 'away' for almost two years so nobody would bug me after 4pm, and my old manager actually praised me for being 'focused.' Fast forward to my current job at a tech company with 8,000 people and I just leave mine green all day, even during lunch, because HR sent out a memo last spring saying we should look 'available.' The thing is, when I was hiding it I got way more done, like actual project work, but I felt like I was sneaking around. Now I leave it on and I get pinged every 12 minutes by people in other time zones who think I'm just sitting there waiting. My coworker in Denver told me she sets hers to 'do not disturb' from 9 to 11 every morning and her team lead never noticed. So which is it, is hiding your status a smart way to protect your time or is it just lying to your team? I honestly can't tell if I'm being paranoid or smart and I need somebody to break the tie.
