Switching from yearly reviews to continuous feedback, is it actually better?
I used to work at a place in Columbus where we got one big review every December and that was it. You'd stress for weeks, write up your wins, and then get a 3.5 rating and a 2% raise no matter what you did. Now my current company does these little check-ins every month where my manager just asks what I need and what's blocking me. Honestly, the monthly thing feels less scary but sometimes I feel like nothing ever gets resolved, we just talk about the same issue over and over. The old way forced everyone to commit to a number, even if it was wrong. Which system have you guys had better luck with, the big annual one or the constant drip feed?
Monthly check-ins only work when the manager actually fixes what gets brought up. If you're circling the same blocker for months, that's not feedback, that's just a meeting with a shrug. The annual review at least forced a hard conversation, even if the math was garbage.
