Just did the math on how much we're paying for cloud storage vs tape archives
I was bored at work last week and crunched the numbers on our AWS bill versus what a tape library would cost. Turns out we've spent $47,000 on cloud storage for old records that haven't been touched in 3 years, while tape would have cost maybe $3,000 total. Has anyone actually made the switch back to tape for cold storage?

Oh wow, okay I was totally in the "cloud is the future" camp until I saw a breakdown like this. Seriously making me rethink our whole backup strategy now.

Yeah, I went through something pretty similar a couple years back. Not tapes exactly, but we moved all our old project files from cloud to a cheap NAS drive sitting in the corner. Saved a ton and nobody even noticed the difference. Your mileage may vary on the hardware side, but for stuff you know you won't touch, it's hard to beat local.
