My little backyard compost pile hit 140 degrees, and I checked it with a $9 thermometer twice a day
Three months ago that pile was just grass clippings and coffee grounds sitting cold in a plastic bin behind my garage in Fresno. I started turning it every Sunday and adding shredded cardboard from Amazon boxes, and last week the probe read 140 degrees in the middle. It dropped to 95 by Tuesday, so I turned it again and it climbed right back up within a day. The whole bin went from maybe 8 inches of slop to about 2 feet of dark crumbly stuff, and I keep catching myself going out there just to look at it. Anyone else get weirdly obsessed with the temp swings, or is it just me?
