Remember when you had to wait for dial-up to load a single blurry picture?

I was thinking the other day about how I used to research stuff for school. Back in the late 90s, I'd sit on the floor of my bedroom in Cleveland, listening to that screeching modem sound for a full 3 minutes just to get one grainy image of a volcano. Now I can pull up 4K video of Mount St. Helens on my phone in 2 seconds flat. The whole shift from waiting for information to having it INSTANTLY feels like some kind of sci-fi prediction that actually came true. Has anyone else stopped and realized how weird it is that we got so used to this?

Remember sitting there praying nobody picked up the phone extension while you were downloading something. It's wild how patience was just built into everything back then, like waiting was the default setting. We really did just accept that blurry pixel was the best we were gonna get and felt lucky to have it.

Man, one time I set a 14MB wallpaper to download overnight and my mom picked up the phone at 2am, I woke up to 92% and a broken spirit. Guess that pixelated mess was character building or whatever.

Yeah @logan_mitchell absolutely nailed it. The key is to turn off call waiting and unplug any other phones in the house before you start a big download. I used to tape a note to the kitchen phone so nobody would forget. Another trick was setting your download manager to resume automatically if it disconnected, some of them had that feature even back then. It's funny how we all developed these workarounds just to get a single wallpaper without losing our minds.
