Shoutout to the 1979 eclipse map in my grandpa's almanac that sent me 40 miles off course
Back in April I tried to use my grandpa's old farmers almanac to pick a spot for the eclipse, and its 1979 path map pointed me toward a town called Perryville that turned out to be 40 miles outside the actual path of totality. I ended up on a gravel road in Missouri with maybe 20 other cars, and we all watched it go dim but never fully dark, which was still pretty cool honestly. My grandpa swore those almanac charts never missed, and I get why he trusted them back before phone maps existed. It made me think about how people used to plan big sky events with paper and guesswork, and sometimes it worked out fine. Has anyone found a decent old printed star chart that still holds up, or is that stuff all outdated now?
