Lost $40 on a group gift lie, now I check Venmo before saying yes

My friend put me down for $40 on a joint birthday present and said everyone else already paid, turns out three of them never did and I covered half the total. Found out when I asked to see the receipt and she got weird about it. Anyone else get stuck covering for someone who fronted the cash? How do you handle it next time?
