My friend's $340 bday dinner turned into a 2 hour argument over who ordered the calamari
Okay so last Saturday we went to this Italian place in Portland for my buddy Dave's 30th, 11 people, and the bill came to $340 plus tip. Dave just says split it even, $31 each, and I'm sitting there with my $16 pasta going wait a second. Two people at the end of the table got like 3 cocktails each and the seafood tower thing, and somehow I'm paying for their lobster? My girlfriend Jenna got a salad and water because she ate before, so she's basically subsidizing someone's $18 martini. I said we should do itemized and Dave got all weird about it, like I was ruining his birthday. We spent the next 2 hours passing the receipt around and doing math on our phones while the waiter just stood there. I get that even split is easier for big groups, but it should not be a default rule when the spending is that lopsided. So am I the cheap one here or is even splitting on a mixed check just plain wrong?
