Binged The Wire in 10 days flat

I hit episode 42 of The Wire last Tuesday and realized I had watched 5 seasons in under two weeks. That show has more layers than I expected for a cop drama from 2002. Anyone else power through a long series faster than they planned?

Oh wow, five seasons in ten days is something. I gotta say though, I never got the hype around that show being some deep masterpiece. It's a decent cop drama with good characters, but people act like it's the most profound thing ever put on television. Maybe I missed something, or maybe it's just not as serious as folks make it out to be.

Man I heard some film critic on a podcast once say that show is basically just a soap opera with better lighting and acting, and honestly it kinda stuck with me. Like yeah it's got some good moments and the cast is solid, but people talk about it like it's Shakespeare or something. I remember reading an article that broke down how most of the "deep" stuff is just recycled plotlines from older shows with a fresh coat of paint. Don't get me wrong, I watched a season and a half and enjoyed it fine for what it is, but calling it a masterpiece feels like a stretch. Sometimes I wonder if folks just need to feel smart for liking it, you know?

My uncle was a Baltimore cop in the 90s. He watched one episode and laughed his ass off. Said the real street work was way more boring, mostly filling out forms and sitting in a car for eight hours. He did admit the corner boys were pretty accurate though. Said the dialogue was dead on for how they talked. He still prefers Law and Order because it's "happier" with the ending always wrapping up neat.
