My 11th rewatch finally showed me what I was missing

I used to skip the cold opens on every show because I thought they were just filler. Last week I was rewatching Breaking Bad with my roommate and he yelled at me to stop fast forwarding. Turns out the cold opens are where they hide half the clues and character stuff. I went back and watched seasons 1 and 2 with the cold opens and it was like a whole different show. Now I never skip them, but I still wonder how many other people do the same thing. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized you were watching a show wrong for years?

I read somewhere that the writers of Breaking Bad actually planned the cold opens to link back to later episodes on purpose. Once I heard that, I went back and checked a few, and yeah, they’re not random at all. It’s kinda wild how much setup they pack into those first two minutes before the credits even roll. I used to treat cold opens as skippable too, mostly because I watched shows on streaming where they felt like a delay before the real episode. But now I treat them like part of the main story, because they basically are. Honestly, missing them is like reading a book but skipping the first page of every chapter.
