Warning: Your old DVD collection might be your best binge buddy
My nephew came over Saturday, saw my shelf of 300+ DVDs from the 2000s, and laughed saying nobody watches those anymore. But then he sat down and we watched an entire season of The Shield in one sitting, no buffering, no autoplay skipping episodes. He said it felt different, like the show demanded your attention instead of feeding it to you on a plate. I told him about how we used to wait a week between episodes and discuss every detail at work the next day. He asked if I missed that, and honestly I do, but there's something cool about seeing him appreciate the old pacing. Anyone else ever show a younger person a physical show and watch their whole attitude flip? What was the show that got them? I'll bet it was something with actual commercial breaks built into the writing.
...and the million dollar question is whether that "demands your attention" thing is just nostalgia goggles or if the format actually made better TV back then. I mean, I grew up on DVD box sets too, but I remember how many shows were thirty percent filler because they had to stretch to twenty-two episodes. Did your nephew actually finish the whole series after that marathon, or did he just appreciate the one night? Because I find younger folks vibe with the old structure until they hit the seventh episode of a season that's clearly spinning its wheels. What did he say when the show actually slowed down, did he stick with it or grab his phone?
