Appreciation post: Cooling my tongs more made my work easier
I used to forge with red hot tongs and my hands would shake. Now I cool them off in water between heats, and my hits are right on target. What little habits have you changed that helped you out?

Oh man, that's such a good point! I used to be the worst about skipping a final wire brush pass on my joints to save thirty seconds. Then I'd get that ugly gray scale trapped in my bead and have to grind the whole thing out. Now I make myself do a quick scrub right before I strike the arc, no matter what. It feels like a tiny delay, but it saves me so much cleanup time later. That little bit of extra shine makes the puddle so much cleaner.

Ever see my friend rush his tool setup? He slowed down and now his welds are way stronger.

Did you see that article about how pros never skip setup steps? It explained that a perfect weld starts long before the arc is struck, with cleaning and calibration. The writer said rushing through prep guarantees weak spots because the metal can't bond right. Those few extra minutes let you check for issues like fit-up or wrong gas flow. Your friend's experience totally proves that point, where patience turns into real strength. It's one of those things that seems obvious but so many people still hurry past it.

Huh, I see it differently. I mean, I've seen guys with years of experience fix a bad setup while they're already welding, just by adjusting their heat or angle on the fly. Maybe clairetaylor's friend just needed more practice time under the hood, not necessarily slower prep. Idk, sometimes that speed comes from knowing how to handle mistakes right when they happen.
