Guy at a hammer-in near Kokomo kept saying 'just buy the steel you need' and it bugged me until I did the math
I was at a hammer-in outside Kokomo, Indiana back in April and this older smith kept telling a few of us new guys to quit hoarding drops and just order the size we actually need for each job. I did the math on my own pile and figured out I was sitting on 240 pounds of cutoffs I will probably never touch. Ordering a fresh 20 feet of 5/8 round for a batch of hooks cost me $38 and saved me two hours of squaring up stubby ends. Curious if anyone else has gone through their scrap pile and been honest about how much of it is actually usable.
