I thought a $4 bar of mild steel was a waste, then a rail spike job in Tulsa proved me wrong
A guy at the supply shop in Tulsa laughed when I grabbed a cheap 1018 bar instead of the good stuff, so I almost put it back on the rack. I used it anyway on a set of decorative hooks and the thing forged clean with almost no cold shuts, which never happens with the pricier stock I usually buy. Does anyone else keep a pile of cheap mild steel around for practice pieces, or am I just getting lucky with this batch?
