My anvil stand collapsed mid-project at 2am in Tulsa

I was forging a set of hoof picks for a client in Tulsa and had my 150 pound anvil on a cheap wooden stand I built from scrap pallets. About 30 minutes into a heavy drawout, the cross brace split right at the joint and the whole thing tipped forward, sending the anvil and my half-finished work into the shop floor. The billet hit the concrete and bent a corner, and I had to reheat and straighten it for another 45 minutes before I could finish. Since then, I welded a steel frame with 3/8 inch plate and bolted the anvil down with lag screws, no more wobble. Have any of you had a stand fail on you, and what did you switch to that actually held up?

Welp, at least it picked 2am to do it instead of waiting for a client visit. Sounds like the pallet stand was just trying to moonlight as a demolition project.

Moonlight as a demolition project" is exactly how it felt when ours gave out last spring. I used to think pallet racks were pretty much indestructible until I saw one drop a full load of boxes like they were nothing. Now I check the bolts and welds way more often than I ever did before.
